If there is an exploded view in the manual it should be fairly straightforward (might be time consuming though) to get at the LED. Should be a straightforward swap, just watch the polarity and test it BEFORE putting it all back together.

I don't have any of the Bachman steamers with the yellow or orange light but I do have a few BLI steamers with them. So far I have done my M1b and J1 with a sunny white. It makes a big difference. Getting the board out that has the LED on it was the hard part.

As seen below the new Bachmann 2-6-6-2 and i'm sure its older brother as well have a very bright yellow LED headlight, Having several Richmond Controls sunny white LEDs I wish to replace it with, should be a very simple straight forward job but thought i'd ask and see if there were any special tricks or things i need look out for.
