Bachmann Dynamis
Posted by stevedb1947 on Wednesday, April 28, 2010 2:24 PM

I have the Bachmann Dynamis. I purchased one of the SW9/1200 switchers from Walthers. It comes with a QSI sound decoder. The QSI manual says that the loco has a "shutdown" mode. If you double press F9 it will go into shutdown. It doesn't seem to matter how many times I press F9 I still can't get it to go into the shutdown mode. Does anyone have this problem or can anyone offer any suggestions?

Hmm...I have not experienced this.  I do know from experience that it is better to take a pause between the quick double-presses to let the decoder signify reception of the command by a 'steam let-off' or air let-off sound...at least that is the way I have done it.  And, the decoder doesn't go silent immediately after the third press.   My SW8 from Walthers (a P2K model) idles for several seconds, and then goes through a shutdown, including the sounds of the engineer leaving the cab and shutting the door.

If the two or three second pause between the three double-presses of F9 don't end with a silent engine, you have either a faulty decoder or it just needs a hard restore of factory defaults.  I would go through the three-step reset before you email or telephone the QSI folks.

However, upon reflection, it may be that your F9 key is not mapped for the QSI function intended.  A post on the Bachmann forum might help.

Keep in mind that by "double press" they don't mean "press F9, then press F9 again". They mean "press F9, Press F9, Press F9, Press F9"  Pressing it once turns F9 on, pressing again turns it off. The QSI 'double press' is turning it on and off twice - so that's 4 total button presses.

Ok. So, you are using the Dynamis! Does double press mean on-off or does it mean on-off, on-off? You mention three double presses. Why three?

Ok. So, you use the Dynamis and this works for you?

From the QSI Revolution A manual:

F9: In neutral puts loco in standby/disconnect mode. When moving activates the Sound Of Power
function, when sound of power is activated you'll hear the horn hoot once. As you throttle up the loco
will sound as though it's under a very heavy load. Concisely, if you throttle down you'll hear the motor
ramp down like it's coasting. Neither of these functions will effect speed until F9 is pressed again when
you will hear a double whistle hoot or horn blast indicating that Sound Of Power has been turned off.

F6: When in neutral plays start-up sounds. When moving in forward or reverse triggers the Doppler
effects causing the all locomotive sounds to “Doppler down”. This can be especially fun at the end of a
grade crossing, or when used in conjunction with other sound effects.

Randy, actually they do mean exactly that.  My glossy handy manual for QSI decoders that come with each BLI engine expressly states that we are to 'double press F9" to initiate each of the three stages of decoder shutdown.

I have done what I call a double-tap for five years with all my QSI's, it being the only way to get the decoder to a full shut-down.  In fact, I shut down each QSI with three double-taps of F9 when I know I won't be wanting to play with them for the next while.  That way, they stay silent and put...no inadvertent creeping with spurious throttle speed step recalls.

Interesting. Maybe the Zephyr doesn't send F9 ON, F9 OFF fast enough (using a DT400 of course, the Zephyr has no F9). I seem to have to press the F key 4 times for those things that need a 'double click' of a function. Last one I had was a Revolution-U that I installed for someone, and I don;t have a DT400 anymore so I wasn;t able to test out anything above F8. Or maybe I'm confused with Loksound.
