Does anyone have good suggestions for a sound card or device that I could download voice files from my computer and play back on my layout. Example: I would love to create a scene and record grandchildren's voices and then play their voices thru such a device. It would give the illusion that they are the voices of the children in the scene! I have even thought of those cheap digital recording cards as a starting point. Thanks

The only thing that comes to mind is a cheap digital voice recorder that maybe you could get to play in a loop. A pretty novel idea I'll give you that. I found this link after doing a quick search maybe this might be the ticket.

One of those cheap MP3 players will do what you want so long as you only intend playback at relatively low volume.

One option is to just use a cheap CD or MP3 player. Either of these would work fine if you want the same sequence of sounds to loop over and over. Most of them also have a "shuffle" function if you want to have several different tracks that play randomly. If you want to be able to trigger sounds, using occupancy detectors, buttons, or even a function decoder if you are using DCC, a couple of options are the Dream Player from Pricom Design or the MP3 Trigger from SparkFun Electronics.
