Thanks to all. I think I will take the advice and get the TCS CN-GP and save the dz143 for another install when I am a little more skilled.
Here's the same drive with a DZ 123 rigged into it. David Bedard hit the nail on the head. Use a TCS CN-GP, and you free yourself from major frame cuts, and the lighting is integrated into the board. The TCS decoder is at least as full function as a 143, with Back EMF, lighting control, and built in momentum. I've put is a zillion of these things, and they really are the best thing since sliced bread...

ScottinSCWhat did you do to isolate the motor? Sorry this is my first wired decoder install.

Just use electric tape to make sure the motor contacts touch nothing but the wire to the decoder.
If you are talking N scale, I installed a Digitrax decoder by removing enough of the lead weight at the cab end, insulated the frame around the motor, and rewired the loco. It's a tight fit, and some weight is lost, but it is really pretty easy to just make it up as you go along.
I have an older life like GP18 (1998 is the date on the frame) I want to install a digitrax DZ143 decoder in this unit, but I am having trouble finding suitable install instructions. When I say suitable I mean something with photos or diagrams. Everything I am finding on the web the photos of the frame look nothing like my loco, or just show the end product with no step by step. I have searched through older post here and have not been successful. If anyone out there has done an install for this loco even if a different decoder I would love to here from you or if you know of a good site to go to that would be great.
Thanks in advance,
Scott
