Hi,
Thanks for the input. Yes, it seems that I can try to find something to sit in the cab space and face up (do I need "air holes" for the sound to get out well?) or I can modify the frame, or perhaps the fuel tank, for the speaker.
Does anyone have a copy of the parts/assembly diagram for the Proto 2000 GP38-2 that *does* come with sound? (I asked Walthers but they didn't have one. They did send me one for a GP30 saying it was similar and it did appear to have a different frame.)
Thanks,Peter

I have no experience with that particular model, but several other brands and models have different frames for sound and non-sound versions.
It is possible that a different frame may be used. However, on the last conversion that I have done, a Proto 2000 SD9, I replaced the standard light board with a Sondtraxx Tsunami, Athern version. I had to tape it in place and add insulating tape on the bottom of the decoder so it wouldn't short out on the frame. I used a .63 diameter speaker and three speaker enclosure rings, and put the capacitor inside the speaker enclosure. The speaker was then installed in the frame under the operators cab with the speaker facing up.
Hope this helps.
Elmer.

In a Proto 2000 GP38-2 locomotive that comes with DCC/sound, where is the speaker located? I have a "DCC ready" unit and can't see for the life of me where one would go, unless the units with DCC/sound have a different frame or something?
