DCC Power supply compatibility
Posted by bwanabob on Monday, February 15, 2010 6:39 PM
I have a Bachmann DCC system and believe I need more juice. I have noticed that the Bachmann 5 amp power supply is considerably more expensive than that from some other manufacturers. For example it is now on sale at Walthers for $200 compared to a Digitrax one for $45. Do I have to use Bachmann's, or can I mix and match? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Are you sure you're comparing similar items?  The Bachmann may be a power booster at that price and the Digitrax may be a power supply -- there is a big difference between these two terms.  You need a power supply to run a power booster.  The power supply for most systems is interchangeable because it is nothing more than an AC transformer.  Some power boosters are also interchangeable; i.e., a CVP booster will work with any DCC system if you can get the command signal plugs to match.

I would suggest that you phone Litchfield Station, Tony's Trains, Ulrich Hobbies, Empire Northern Models, or some other major DCC dealer and explain to them what you think you need and see what they recommend as your best course of action.

All of these companies are very reputable and will not try to sell you something you don't need.

The cheapest Digitrax booster I see on the Walther's site is the DB150 at $179.99, currently on sale for $159.99.

And it will need a PS515 Power supply for about $40.
