I think that Digitrax Manual you're referring to is their Mobile Decoder User Manual and PR Decoder Progreammer User Manual, which actually is a generic manual covering every Digitrax decoder in general.  Each specific type of decoder has its own individual pamphlet that you can also download from their web site.

Yup I hear you on the lack of sound etc. I may just stick it in one of my yard switchers or something like that. I went to Digitrax's website and looked it up it has a 78 page manual I guess a lot has changed in a few years.

Just my 2 cents worth, I spent the rest on trains. If you choked a Smurf what color would he turn?

That old DH83 is really lacking as a motor decoder, too. Might as well replace it with a single decoder that does motor and sound.

There is an available "sound project" for a Challenger (4-6-6-4) which could be downloaded to a Sound Bug.  I'd imagine that would be more appropriate than the generic steam sound.

A Tsunami or QSI decoder, though, will be more satisfying in the long run.  If you have the resources and another place for this "hand-me-down" decoder, I think the Y3 is deserving of the better sound.

Older Digitrax Decoder coupled with a Sound Bug?

I have a Proto Heritage Y3 with a Digitrax DH83FX decoder in it. I need to install a new NMRA plug as whom ever installed it did not hook up the direction wires etc.and I'm not totally happy with the way things were done.  I posted a question about not being able to program it with a 4 digit address earlier in the week. That issue has since been resolved but my question is do you think it's worth adding a Sound Bug and speaker of course to this decoder/locomotive. I am not sure if this is correct but I've been told that the Sound Bug has more generic steam sounds and would not be a good choice for a Y3 but more for something like a K4 or a consolidation etc. Do you think this is a wise choice or am I just being penny wise pound foolish. If the combination works but does not sound correct for this locomotive I can always switch it to one of my smaller one's I guess.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks
