Hi Jeff
There is a thread just down the forum that will give you some background
http://cs.trains.com/trccs/forums/t/163670.aspx
In general, yes decoders are compatible with other DCC systems. Other decoder equipped locos can be run on the Command 2000, but read the other thread as it explains some of the shortcomings.
At that price, it would not be a bad way to get your feet wet in DCC.
As you can see, more than one of us was pounding out the same answer at the same time.!

I have a chance to get a Command 2000 with handheld, power supply and 10 decoders for under $40. My question is: are the decoders compatable on other systems and are other decoders compatable with mine? Could someone using a different decoder come over and use my layout or coulsd I go to theirs. With money at a premium at the moment, I hate to pass up this offer.
TIA,
Jeff
