The DH123AT has Economy Series 3 features and the DH163AT has Series 3 features. The main differences are 6 functions(outputs) verses 2 functions(as an example, if you want ditch lights in addition to the two headlights, you would have to use the DH163AT) and Scaleable Speed Stabilization(Back emf compensation) on the DH163AT.

Digitrax Decoders for older Athearn Diesels
Posted by AltoonaRailroader on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 7:49 AM

Hi all,

Will someone explain to me in as simple terms as possible what the difference is between the Digitrax DH163AT (says premium) compared to the Digitrax DH123AT (standard)? They both have the same amperage draw range of 1.5 to 2.0 max but I'm a little cloudy on the functions. I'm just getting into DCC and I'd like to install decoders on my Athearn BB's. I've got instructions on how to isolate the motors from the frames and all that good stuff. And I know everyone has different opinions and all but are these a good decoder for what I'm trying to do? I've seen others too, the TCS and DCE. And one more question, what is a really good book to learn a lot about DCC? I know kalmbach has several but which is best?

 Thanks everyone,
