I have placed two identical locos(Atlas Trainmasters) three feet apart and have run around a fifty foot loop. While getting them matched in one direction they will be unmatched in the opposite direction. I am not sure how to deal with this so I made sure they were matched going forward.

once you have successfully matched the loco's using different addresses and the consist method, you can then change them all to the same address and the speeds will still match as you haven't altered the speed CV's. so if your system counts loco's in a consist with different addresses as 4 seperate slots, you can free up 3 of them.
I have done it before. You will need to assign each loco a different address. I speak from experience on that one. It would help if you had a circle of track so you can monitor what their doing and can run continuously.
I set up a consist and place each engine exactly 12 inches apart. When one of the either increases/decreases the distance between them then I adjust. Since you have them with drawbars, then the next piece of advice may not be useful. I have monitor the slack in the couplers. If they push, then I adjust to make them pull, but not too much.
You will need to do this while programming in Ops mode. It will make it easier.

I have an A-B-B-A F unit permanent lash-up of Stewart F units assigned to pull a coal train. Being as I have them all programed under one address will that cover speed matching or do I have to do that individually?
These engines are all connected with draw-bars not couplers except the obvious A&B ends so for all intents and purposes they will never come uncoupled or be used for anything other then pulling that coal train or an extra freight so I figured the single address was acceptable.
Is there anything else I should look into besides speed matching when attempting something like this.
