Decoder clarification please
Posted by yankee flyer on Tuesday, September 1, 2009 9:15 AM

 Hello all.

Is it a lot easier to speed match similar locos if they have the same decoder manufacture?  Would there be much of an advantage to replacing a decoder so that both had, say QSI or NCE etc?

Thanks

It wouldn't make much difference, CV 2, 5 and 6 settings are going to be about the same. There are some differences in how different manufacturers set up CV 3 and 4 (momentum). If you've already installed the decoders, I don't think it would be worth taking them out. I've speed matched engines with different manufacturers with no problem.

As long as the decoders allow those CV's to be changed it shouldn't be a problem. Some decoders (Bachmann for example) don't allow it so speed matching is a bit more tricky.
