Hi all
Trying to find out if Soundtraxx version #80 has BEMF I see no mention of BEMF in my manuals. If it has BEMF what CV is it?
Thanks
Lee
What manuals are you referring to? Go to the SoundTraxx web site and download their Technical Reference Manual for the applicable decoder you have; i.e., steam or diesel. Beginning with CV 10, there are CVs that control BEMF scattered throughout that manual.
What is SoundTraxx vesrion #80?

I initially was wondering the same thing because SoundTraxx Tsunami decoders are not yet to that high a version number. Even the LC series only made it to Version 2.0.
Maybe there's the number 80 somewhere in the documentatiion he has.
The number 80 has not been assigned to any DCC manufacturer by the NMRA, whether in Decimal or Hex, so it can't be the value in CV 7 or CV 8.
That's my WAG.

I did a little searching for "soundtraxx version 80" and came up with surroundtraxx dsp-80.
No way.
There's no way the SurroundTraxx system would have BEMF because it does not control motors, but is only a sound system that you install under your layout.
I have to assume he is using the Tsunami. Just a WAG.
After a little more searching I came upon the page from Tony's Trains. Scroll down to

Read that paragraph.
Thanks everyone for answering.
Here's the details. I bought a Bachman Spectrum 2-6-6-2 with sound from Micro-Mark and down loaded manuals for it. In phone conversion, Bachmann says they can't answer my question as to why it surges going down hill. They have not answered two Emails I sent afterward. So I'm trying everything I can before sending it back.
I have put loco on programing track and read CVs. #8 CV=141 Soundtraxx#7 CV=80 version Could this be #280?There is reference to several DSDs, That the manual should cover, DSD 280 LC is one of them.Others have mentioned turning off BEMF. I need to know if this decoder has it. At this point I'm ready to start pulling my hair out, and I don't have any to spare.Even though they make it, this loco Spectrum 2-6-6-2 seems to be an orphan, or discontinued I couldn't find it on Bachmann's site.
Lee,
BEMF really only causes surging problems with multi-unit consists. Your problem sounds like there is too much 'play' in the worm shafts. The worm rides forward on the spur gear and then pops back when it can go no further forward - this happens when going down-grade with a heavy train behind your engine. Thrust washers inserted between the pillow blocks and worm will keep the worm from 'hunting'.

JIm I tend to agree with you but I'm trying to cover all bases because the loco is new and I don't want to take it apart. After my talk with Mr. Riley at Bachmann I don't have much faith in them being able to fix it. I've posted the surging before and others have accused the BEMF of causing the problem so I'm trying cover to everything before sending it back.
Good day.
I believe I have read in the Bachmann forums about too much play in the gearing. You might consider returning the loco for another one. i know Bachmann has a replacement policy. Do not know about Miro Mark. I do know Micro Mark is a good company.
Spectrum engines with Tsunami's are set up "dual mode" so they'll work on DC or DCC. Try the engine on DC. BEMF won't work on DC so if the engine still has issues, it's probably not the decoder but the engine.
BTW I like to do a "break-in" run on DC before running an engine on DCC, or before installing a decoder...just to be sure the engine runs OK 'out of the box'.
Okay, your explanation of what you have clears up a lot of questions. The Bachmann with factory installed Tsunami is a watered-down decoder that is not the same as a full function Tsunami, so the on-line Technical Reference Manual for a Tsunami does not particularly apply.
I don't think SoundTraxx provides any documentation for the Bachmann version decoder other than what comes in the box with the engine. If that doesn't mention BEMF, then it doesn't have it.
Disable dual mode operation by setting CV 29 to a value of 34, and that may solve the surging problem. If not, then it's a mechanical defect and not the decoder.
Yes, SoundTraxx does supply manuals for the Bachmann factory installed steam decoders right on the below page. People, store the site in your Favorites folder. There are two documents. The instructions are in the second document. Look for Step 9: Setting up the Hyperdrive.

Again, run the loco on DC first. Even running on DC, the motor still receives pulses, PWM from the decoder but the Hyperdrive is out of the equation as far as I know. I do not use the feature in my Tsunami decoders.
