As are my road engines - silly P2K making their GP-7's 'backwards' But my switchers all have 2 digit cab numbers so they are all at 6. Luckily no on had the idea that the cab end of an S-1 is 'front' so I didn't have to use 7.

CV29 at 0 is an invalid value. If you are using an address of 127 or less, CV29 should be 2. If you are using an address greater than 127, CV29 should be 34. Either setting has DC turned off, basic operation without a speed curve, and using 28/128 speed steps.
Also I will add that I have NEVER seen this "instant takeoff" issue with any brand of decoder I've used (Digitrax, NCE, TCS) when DC conversion was turned on. The odd runaway when powering on the track, yes, but if the loco was stationary and I advanced the throttle to step 1, I never had any of the suddenly take off. It COULD be caused by invalid value sin other CVs, which is why I ALWAYS reset a new decoder as the first step in programming it. There are many more CVs than are documented, reserved for manufacturer use, and who knows what values do what, or what may have been set int he decoder for factory testing. Just reset first, and then program, so you knwo you will be starting with a clean slate. WHen even the lights don;t work, somethign is very wrong, and CV29 bit 2 (DC conversion) is NOT goign to fix the behavior of the lights. But CV29 with some unsupported value - who knows what the loco will do. Setting a proper value would clear it up - and resetting the decoder would definitely set a proper value AND a known address - 03.
CV29 is set to 0. Any other thoughts?
I learned the same trick with NCE many moons ago. My diesels will never run on DC anyway.

KEKALIGHTING Hey there guys, I have a nightmare I am trying to figure out. I have a dt-400r 5amp digitrax booster. Lastnight I tried programing a digitrax dz125 in one of my old kato units. I went through the steps to program the decoder with a 4 digit address. much to my suprise the engin takes off at the highest speed the loco can achive. I start with the throtle at speed 00, then as soon as I increase it to 01 the loco speeds off. There is no difference if you are at 01 or 99 it stayes at the fastest speed possible. Also I noticed the lights dont respond to the on off function they are just off. I have double checked my wiring and no problems there. I have done over 50 n scale decoder installs and this is the first time I have seen this. Any thoughts? Thanks, Frank

Turn off analog compatability support in CV29. I've had this happen before. Since I turned off analog compabaility on all of my units, I have never had another run away.
I can read the address. I am going to meter the connections on the motor to the chassie and see if that could be the problem. I am at work now so when I get home I will have to try. I will let you know.
