First of all I know I could answer this by reading my big DCC book or possibly the Digitrax direction book but quite honestly I don't have the patience.
I operate my layout with Digitrax and locomotives that all have decoders capable of 128 step speed and that is the way it's set up. I have acquired a couple of older locos with decoders that I believe to only be capable of 14 step speed. Without knowing what mfgr decoders these are is there a way to program the Digitrax to use 14 step for those locos requiring such?
Hopefully that makes sense.

The exact steps depend on which throttle you are using, but what you need to do is Status Edit the address of those decoders that only do 14 speed steps. You do this when selecting the address, and then it is remembered for future use. Grab the PDF version of your throttle manual from the Digitrax site and just jump right to the section on Status Editing - no searching or paging through required. Acrobat Reader can display a table of contents and jump you right to what you need.

Hi Randy, Thanks a million! Sorry to sound like such a lazy butt but I'm nursing a shattered left heel and I have surgery for it tomorrow so needless to say between pain pills and a pre-occupied head it's difficult to stay focused. This will help. Thanks again bubba!
In the event someone searches this topic.
Under the Super Empire Builder instruction manual covering the DT400 throttle, section 17.1 "to change the status of the decoder." This covers it completely. Very simple fix too.
Thanks again, Jeff
UPDATE: Both locomotives working well. Both are on 14 step speed control. I now appreciate 128 step a whole lot more.
