OK, got it figured out. For the Soundtraxx LC series, (I use a Digitrax SEB) bring up the loco on the throttle, and hit "emergency stop" once. The sound rolls off and does not resume untill you bring the throttle up past 1. This behavior "sticks" through layout power down and back up.

David, you're getting mellow. I could have sworn you'd reply, "Yes, just apply power to it the first time."
Thanks for the input! I went to the soundtraxx site and for the "LC" decoders its CV11, they call it the "quiet bit".
Now please dont beat on me too bad but does anyone know what the CV might be for Genesis w/ MRC?
It will be different for each type, but it's not difficult. Usually it's just changing one CV from "0" to "1" or something like that.
I agree that they should all be capable of remaining silent upon start-up, but each decoder has specific instructions in its manual that describe the procedure. I found it worth while looking it up and selecting the appropriate value for the CV in question. Most QSI's that I have, if not all of them, come from the factory, or will factory default, to silent upon start-up if they had not been used in the previous operating session. Tsunamis have their own procedure, but they will remain silent. Same for my one Loksound decoder...it powers up initially and then drops off to silence within about two seconds.

is it a "common" cv to all decoders or do I have homework to do.
It is a setting in each sound decoder that lets you determine its state upon power up.
