Hi There!
If its of any use, I did a sound install in an athearn GP-9 (or 7?) blue box and did some nibbling and got the speaker to fit under the cab roof pointing down. I used bathroom calk to seal it in. I wasn't using a soundbug so I cant help you there, but as for a speaker location, it works pretty darn well. The math would dictate a larger sound chaber behind the speaker (what is commonly called the baffle) but for my needs its a solid 7 out of ten for clarity and low end rumble.

thank you sir; I assumed you would be one of the responders. I always look forward to your replies to all the questions asked. I will go for the oblong small speaker and enclosure. Wouldou recommend a 28mm and do you have one in mind? thank you in advance brian
One of my gripes about Soundbugs. They include a 1-inch round speaker, that basically will not fit in anything but a tender or a dummy engine. Why not skip the speaker, cut the cost a couple of bucks and let people know they need to buy a speaker that fits the engine?
Yes, you need to get a speaker that fits, probably an oval one. Then, you need a speaker enclosure. Unfortunately, the enclosure makes the space problem even more critical. You can home-build an enclosure, which might be the right thing to do in tight situations.
I put a Tsunami into a P2K GP9, basically the same engine, a couple of months back. I should have photographed the installation, but I didn't. What I did was mill out some of the weight around the cab opening and mount the speaker and enclosure facing down over the cab-end truck. I built my own enclosure out of styrene and glued it all together with the speaker to eliminate air-leaks. This was a long and tedious process, by the way. On the other hand, I really like the results.
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
I got my soundbug today and hooked it up to my proto 2k gp7. The sounds were all okay so i started to put the shell back on. Whoops where does it all fit? I need for someone who has done this installation to tell me how to get the capacitor and speaker into that shell. It almost begs to buy a much smaller speaker; i don't see where the shell can be chiseled to get anything in. Pleasse help. Brian
