Ditch Lights
Posted by Magnum019 on Friday, April 10, 2009 9:41 PM

I run HO in Digitrax and trying to hook up 1.5 V bulbs for Headlight & Ditch Lights.  I would like to run them through just the one connection (headlight), would I need 1 Resistor with the Value of 1.5V or 1 Resistor with Value of 4.5V or 3 Resistors???

thanks again

What you need is the current rating of your bulbs. And an individual resistor for each bulb. From the current rating of the bulb, you can calculate the required value of the resistor.

If they are Digitrax 165 series decoders, current limiting is built in and you may not need any resistors.

Most of the ones I have are 123's.........if I knew any better at the time, would've purchased 165's.................that's why I was just going to run off the Headlight but guess I'll be using 3 resistors.......

and thanks again for the help guys..........................C

123's aren't going to have enough functions. For a headlight, backup light, and a pair of ditch lights that can flash, you need 4 total functions.

What I was or going to try do do is run all 3 Lights and hook them to the Front or White wire.  I know they will come on whenever I have the Front Headlight on but that's ok with me for now........

That will work as long as you don't exceed the 125ma total for the function output. ie, 3 50ma bulbs will NOT work. 30ma bulbs would be fine.

Thanks for that input, the Front is 30 ma and using 15ma for the Ditch, I did not know of the total MA for each output..........
