modelalaska jbinkley60 so you really have taken a SIlver and converted it to a Goild unit. Hence the title of the post... Yes, I realize this is the case but this was the only type I could find at the time in my road name/number. I have a gold in GP40 and that is my best running and sounding locomotive. BTW Jeff, how is the sound from your MP15's? I am curious what speaker QSI/Atlas fitted in there. I am really impressed with that mini-oval you see in the photos. Peter

The sound is pretty good. Not quite as good as my 8-40Cs, but they have a bigger speaker. I think the speaker in these is a 16x35mm but without taking the shell off, I can't tell for sure. There is only so much you can do in this small space.

modelalaska Hi all, A while back I started a post on upgrading an Altas MP15(HO) to sound. I started with an ESU v3.5 decoder and matching speaker. I installed and ran it. The sound was so weak I couldn't hardly hear the transition between the notches. Idle was the only way I could really hear the sound. I tried reprogramming and not much difference. Fortunately my friends @ Ulrich Models graciously replaced that decoder with an QSI Rev. A. I hooked that up with a temporary speaker and promptly fried the decoder when the bare speaker wires hit one of my brass signals . To make a long story short, Ulrich Models sent me up another one and I just got that installed with this totally amazing mini-oval speaker. This unit went from one of my worst to second best. It runs very smooth and sounds wonderful. The decoder just barely fit and I had to stash the capacitor in the cab (hardly noticeable). Here are a couple of pictures... enjoy, Peter.

The Altas Gold units come with QSI decoders installed so you really have taken a SIlver and converted it to a Goild unit. Who says you can't covert silver into gold ? I generally buy the Gold units up front and have found the costs of a Silver unit + sound decoder and speaker often are the same as just buying a Gold unit up front. Congratulations on your upgrade.I have 2 of these Gold units in Norfolk Southern roadname. I really like them.
