Thanks guys!  It's running.   Now to get that dynamic hatch back on without wrecking the paint!  It's sure nice to get some quick and informative answers.  Bow

Yes, you can read back the CV's on those decoders. If the plug (accessable through the dynamic hatch) is in the DC position, you should hear an audible squeeling sound if the plug is in the DC position. Remove the jumper plug and move it side-ways into the adjoining set of plugs. You should now be able to read back the CV's on your programming track.

The instructions I have are for an Atlas Master Series HO GP-38 with Dual Mode Decoder.  This is the two function dual mode decoder as opposed to the newer four-function decoders.

The instructions state that the decoder is currently set to analog mode (DC).  It also says that you can remove the dynamic brake section to change the jumper plug.

If you look at the decoder board with the two connection tabs at the top of the long side, you'll see the jumper plug just to the left of center. There are six holes into which the jumper can plug.  According to the diagram the engine is in analog mode with the plug inserted into the four left sockets.  For digital mode, the plug uses the four right sockets.

I don't know if you got the engine new or previously owned, so it's probably best to pull the hatch and take a look see.  If you go to the Atlas site, you can probably find instructions for the dual mode decoders there.

Atlas Duel Mode Decorder Question
Posted by CONCORD on Monday, March 30, 2009 2:03 PM

I have a GP-38  with a duel mode decorder and I don't know what mode it was in when  I got it. Can I just safely just put it on the programing track and try to read the the road number to see if it's programmed, and is working in  DCC?  If the DCC jumper is set for DC it won't hurt the decorder will it? And if it set to DC can I reach the jumper by removing the dynamic brake hatch?

Thanks guys I know it's an easy one, but........
