Motor control from power pack
Posted by paxton58 on Friday, February 13, 2009 11:13 AM

I am trying to use a salvaged 9.6vdc electric drill motor to power an accessory.  I tested it by attaching the motor leads to the DC from a power pack but it wouldn't turn.  When it is connected, it reads minor voltage.  Unconnected, I get maximum from the power pack.   Any suggestions other than giving up?

Sounds like it is shorted, as the voltage drops when you connect it.  Does the power pack have an 'overload' indicator or a 'reset' button that pops?

I suspect the drill motor tries to draw more amperage than the power pack is able to provide.

Did the motor still run when you removed it from the drill?  From your description of what is happening, my guess is that the motor is bad and should be discarded.

I do have a short across the motor leads.  Thanks.  Now I have to find another alternative.

What kind of motor speed and torque do you need?  And what's your upper limit for $$$?

I am experimenting and wanting to turn a 5/16 threaded rod to move a transfer table 12 inches in a reasonable amount of time.  Instead of trying to find a motor and gears, I was going to try to attach the drill chuck to the rod  and both reversing and speed control.

How do you set it up?  Have any plans?
