BLI N&W J 4-8-4 sound
Posted by GTX765 on Friday, February 6, 2009 9:56 AM

I have BLI N &W j type and the sound does not sound good. The whistle sounds horrible, just not a good sound at all. The chuff and bell are ok. I want to upgrade or make it better. It has a QSI sound system and not sure the chip upgrade would even help. How would you go about improving the sound on this loco? Or if you have this loco what CVs did you change to get the sound to work in manner you found acceptable?

Thanks

Sean

Also lets say i do buy the prgrammer, i dont know what the J type should sound like or what sound file to use. Any ideas? My J type just sounds like a muffled steam boat whistle. Sorry  i have never heard a J type in person but I know mine does not sound like anything I want to hear on my train.  The sound is muffled and very quiet compared to the other locos. Maybe i could increase the volume of the whistle? I will have to see wht CV it is.

Thanks for any feedback.

The one BLI J type that I have heard is spot on on the whistle.  N&W used a steamboat whistle on them.

The sound was recorded from a J that was still running in excursion service until a few years ago.

If you change the sound, it will no longer be a true J sound; but to each his own.
