Digitrax recommends closing Op Switch 5.. Also Close Op switch 44 which changes the DCS 100 to 120 slots instead of its default 22. The DCS100 will work just fine if you never change the option switches.

To release engines from the throttle just press the Loco button. The address will flash on the display. Then press the Disp button and the flashing address is released from the throttle. You can also just select a new address on the throttle. That accomplishes the same thing.

If you release an address that is in a consist or at a speed above 00, it will remain in the system forever. DCS100 will not purge it under either of those two circumstances and it will occupy a slot forever. There are ony 120 slots ands if they all get fiilled you will get a Slot=max message. Slots will need to be cleared before another address can be selected.

If the released address is not in a consist and/or at speed 00, a Digitrax system will automatically purge that address after 200 seconds of inactivity. You will hear 3 beeps each time an address is purged. In reality, the address is still in the slot, but the slot is marked for use by another address if one is selected.

when you fire the superchief up for the first time you don't have to use  any ops switches and don't use any until you become more familiar with the unit. to dispatch a loco from the dt400 turn the knob of the controller that controls the loco counter clockwise to be sure that there is no speed showing on the display, press the loco button. the display should begin to flash. then hit the disp button and the loco will be dispatched or released. there must be no speed showing on the display, just 0, or the loco will not be dispatched. this sends the loco to the command.stations memory in a recall stack. personally i do not use the recall feature. i just select the throttle knob that i want to use and enter the locos address and go. one option switch you should learn about is option 39 which is used to clear the memory of the command station. i use this when i have a lot of locos mu'ed together and want to change the consists. this will not affect the loco decoders. also the command station comes with the address default set at 22. if you want to change it you'll have to use the option switch for it to change it to 120 addresses
