Sound in Atlas C30-7??? Is it possible?
Posted by Trainman Sam on Thursday, January 29, 2009 5:38 PM

I just purchased an Atlas C30-7, which is DCC ready, last night and am waiting for it to arrive in a few days.  But I wanted to know, is there enough room in this engine to install a sound decoder and speaker?  I would like to have sound for my engines, and make the experience a little more "Real"!!

I have already viewed the parts list, eploded view of engine:

http://www.atlasrr.com/pdf/PartsPDFs/HOC30-7Locomotive.pdf

this view is what has me puzzled...

Thanks in addvance!

1st Thanks for the reply

2nd, does that mean that I have to remove the weight that currently resides there?

Sorry, I should have mentioned that the weight is under the cab area, where exactly would you mount the speaker?  Up under the roof of the cab?

Because in looking at the diagram on the link I provided above, it doesn't look like there is very much room in the cab area, I would have to cut down the main body mold and remove some of the material from the weight that will be directly underneath?  You say that won't affect performance, would that still be the case after removing some of the plastic from the mold? It's not going to affect the stability of the model in any way will it?

Thanks,

Sam

This loco is similar to the C425 that I just installed aTsunami AT1000 decoder into with minor problems. The board is a direct replacement for the Atlas original board and the speaker was installed above the decoder board. I did not use the speaker enclouser that was recommended. It didn't fit. I applied a new styrene enclousre around the small oval speaker and only had to remove one shell rib with a Dremel cutter. Everything work well and the shell went back on without any trouble. Watch out for the prongs that lock the shell on ... I broke several but the shell is still well locked into place. Dick Arrow Creek and Western
