wont read loco
Posted by k4dan on Thursday, January 22, 2009 6:00 PM

hello,

just got my digitrax pr3 today.works great

i programmed a bli precision with qsi sound  and a digitrax 123 decoders with it, using jmre decoder pro, so i assume it is set up correctly.

i am now Trying to program a mth triplex but it wont read the decoder. did any one have this problem with mth, or do i need to do something different.

on the other two i read the decoders because already had them programed via the super chief

and the tripled was also programed (long address only) also.

i didn't see a listing for mth under decoder types.

any one have any ideals

thanks in advance,

Dan

MTH decoders do not comply with the NMRA DCC Standards so you must have an MTH DCS system to program them; they are not DCC as we know it, but are a proprietary system.

The Genesis probably has an MRC decoder.  Does it run on your layout?

I don't have any MRC decoders myself.  I was reading earlier that some earlier models of them actually don't support readback.  Maybe someone else can confirm that.

1) Sure, you can add a manual entry for it in JMRI.

2) The Athearn Challenger use MRC decoders that lack readback.  You'd do the same thing, manually create an entry using the defaults and manually update it with any CV changes you've made.

3) That's why I won't buy any MTH or MRC products.

Is this true of the newer MRC sound decoders that are in Genesis locomotives ?  I was looking at the Genesis SD45-2 sound units for Norfolk Southern that Athearn just announced for a September delivery.  I wouldn't want to end up not being able to read back values.

I have two Athearn genesis and neither one read back. I installed a QSI Revolution into one and it runs a whole lot smoother.

MRC claims they are adding readback to their new sound decoders - but whether or not they will be in the SD45-2 is anyone's guess.

$249 may be more than I am willing to spend to find the answer.
