Rule 17 programming question
Posted by MRRSparky on Wednesday, January 21, 2009 8:30 PM

I have been somewhat mystified as to how to do this with my several brands of decoders.  Here is the list of what I have:

Soundtraxx Tsunami steam

TCS m-1

Loksound micro V 3.5

I use Digitrax Zephyr controlled by a DT 400.  All locos are HO scale.

If I am reading my Tsunami User Manual correctly, if I want to implement Rule 17 dimming, they have to be non-directional AND I have to give up on the dynamo sound when F0 is pressed to turn on the lights.  Does that mean I have to manually switch the lights relative to the direction of travel?

Ideally, what I would like is to have F0 turn the lights on and off, with the light in the direction opposite of travel dimmed, while the light in the direction of travel at full brightness. All my locos are steam or very early Diesel.  Yes, I am aware that modern locos don't operate that way.  I don't know what the prototypical practive for my locos of the 1930s and 1940s.

Can someone:

1.  straigten me out on the Tsunami issue

2.  help out with directions for the TCS decoders and the Loksound decoders.  And yes, I have read (and reread) the appropriate manuals, the Loksound especially.

If the answer is that I cannot do what I want, I will leave the lights undimmed.  Thanks

For the TCS, CV 61 controls the dimming and the BEMF.  Default is 1, BEMF on.  Adding 32 will dim the light opposite the direction of travel.  If you like, adding another 16 will dim the light when stopped.

CV 49 controls the white wire, and CV 50 controls the yellow wire.  I think both should be set to 40 to allow Rule 17 in both directions.  I might have to play around with it to see what actually happens.
