Hi!

I have 5 BLI paragon locos, and to the best of my knowledge, all Paragons come with Quantum sound and DCC decoders.  Note that Paragons come in a reddish brown box.

Having said that, one of my Paragons - an ATSF RSD-15 didn't have any sound.  It was supposed to of course, and I sent it back to BLI and they installed it, sent it back saying that someone goofed in manufacturing.  By the way, the sound to me is awesome!

One other thing - if you are running paragons on a DC power layout, you really need to get the Quantum Engineer.  This black box fits between the powerpack and track and allows you to bring out all the sounds - and believe me it is nice!

So, if you truly have a Paragon, and it is "quiet", I suggest you call BLI and get their ok to send it back.

ENJOY,

Just lookng at the BLI catalog.  It should have sound.  All Paragon models listed have sound AND DCC built in.  The Blueline varies with most coming with sound and DCC ready.

btw. I have 2 of the big GE's and they sound great.

Examine the bottom of the tender.  If you can see a speaker, it has sound.  If you just see a bunch of open holes and no speaker, it does not have sound.  You could buy them both ways.  You should be able to pull the shell off of the tender frame by just pulling on it.  Open up the tender and see if there is a lot of electronics and speakers inside.  If not, then come back with your question on what to buy.

Yes i have other with sound this one has "no sound" in small print on the box. They were made both ways,i called bli and they said thet cant put sound in them or sell me the sound board for them (I think it becaues of the lawsuite with mth) so they told me the only thing i can do is get an aftermarket unit.i seen that qsi has ones in the walthers book but list two types. so i dont know which one is correct or if they are advable yet so i was hoping some one here could lead me in the right direction.

K4,

The B one ( the one that has black shrink wrap on it) is what you are looking for.

Don't get the decoder from Walthers unless you like paying double the price that you can find one for at a major DCC dealer/installer such as Litchfield Station or Tony's Train Exchange.  Shop around before buying and compare prices.

Here are three dealers that have competitive pricing and are all very reputable, and can advise you on exactly what is needed because they have probably installed sound into Paragon locomotives:

The BLIs came in the red boxes with sound and the black boxes without sound.  They still make both.  I don't know if the black boxes had Paragon written on the box or not.  I'll have to check the next time I am at the LHS.

You could wait for the QSI U decoder to come out or you can stuff a Soundtraxx Tsunnami (heavy steam) in the tender. I dont know if the non sound locos came with the reed switch over the flywheel to triger the chuff or you may have to add a wheel and pickup to the unit.

The black boxes didn't arrive until the first release of the SD40-2's

all the DC nonsound versions before that came in the same red box as the sound units, the only difference is on the white model label, where is stated No Sound
