Does "being updated" mean that they have become reliable?
davidmbedard Not all of them are "drop in". For example, the one for the Kato AC4400CW requires you to modify the shell to make it fit. It doesnt tell you that in the instructions.....they (MRC) conviently left that part out. David B

The AC 4400 decoder has been updated, and both the speaker and the large yellow caps on top of the board (the ones requiring body mods) have been moved, they also have updated software.

sschnabl Has anyone installed one of these MRC drop-in sound decoders? How do they sound? I have a couple of Kato F units and am wondering if it would be worth the trouble to convert these to sound. Thanks Scott

The install is a simple one, no milling needed, as for the sound you will have to decide for yourself, but I'm happy with mine.

i put mrc sound decoders into two of my atlas n scale locos. the frames had to be milled to fit the speaker into the fuel tank area. sent them to aztec. $20 bucks a piece. the sound is good for the room where i have my layout, but when i go up to my club the sound gets lost in the large room and you have to be standing next to the locos to hear the sound. the sound cannot be muted unless you go into the programing mode and adjust the cv that controls the sound. one of them no longer controls the loco but the sound is still on. i replaced it with a dn 163 ao. the other one still works but stops the loco intermittantly. i would save your money and wait until one of the leading decoder manufacturers makes a good one for n scale.
