DCC querys

I'm almost ready to take the DCC plunge, but have a few questions that my visit to three LHS's couldn't (or wouldn't) be answered. I am leaning towards the CVP "Easy DCC" system and in their literature they mention "common rail or direct home" wiring. In short, what's that all about? Secondly, can turnout motors still be powered by the AC side of a DC power pack? Thirdly: do Atlas turnouts need to be insulated and powered in a DCC system? And lastly: if Atlas TO's are used (not insulated), are shorts eliminated (hmm, that may be the same question, eh?). Anyway, any and all info will be greatly appreciated.         GS

1. Common Rail is normally used with Atlas cab control wiring.  'Direct Home' wiring is usually 2 wires to a power 'bus', and a bus that follows under the track with feeders up to the track.  Normally the 'bus' can be #14 residential wiring with the typical #20 red/black feeders from the 'bus' to the rails.  Now, if you have a 'wye' or a reversing loop, you will need to 'double gap' just like with DC wiring.
2. Atlas switch machines could/should be powered from something other than you DCC system.  An old DC power pack is just fine.
3. Atlas turnouts are 'DCC Friendly' - No need to do anything to them.  You only need to add insulated rail joiners/gaps if there is a 'wye' or reverse loop situation.
