Automatic Turnout Control
Posted by PDizzle on Monday, November 24, 2008 11:44 AM

I am building a point-to-point layout with return loops at each end.  I am using DigiTrax DCC.  I would like to be able to do "hands off" continuous running.  Is there a fairly simple way to automatically control the turnout at each return loop so that the train can enter the loop and get back out without an operator having to manually throw the turnout while the train is in the return loop?

Electronics aren't my strong point, and I'd prefer to avoid a computer interface.  I already have the return loops set up with automatic polarity reversal.

Many thanks for help on this.

You can do this in an entirely non-electronic way, as long as you don't mind trains always entering the loop from the same side. Use a spring switch - a light spring instead of a switch motor keeps the points pushed one way, but not so hard that it will derail cars coming from the open side.

The other option is a different auto-reverse that has an output to trigger a stationary decoder to operate the turnout. Or a basic detection section to do the same thing. Ideally you'd want 2 detection sections, to be sure the rear of the train has cleared the turnout before throwing it.

Thanks, Randy.

Any idea where I could find a wiring schematic for connecting a stationary decoder for the turnout to 2 occupancy detecters?

Regards,

Paul

If you use Tortoise switch motors you can use the Hare controller that has an option that can do just what you want.
