mico LED's
Posted by nscaler711 on Thursday, October 16, 2008 8:53 PM

Well ive been hunting for some Micro LED's.

you know the ones that are commonly found on a motherboard, or used in some n-scale police or emergency vehicles...

if im right, they are like 1mm X 1mm? that and a 3mm LED wont work.... (also i do alot of work with LEDS so definitely not a novice ;) )

also if it helps they are flat, and they are surface mount.

if i am confusing you all tell me cause i myself am confused (cause i cant seem to find any!!)

Check with one of the electronic suppliers like Mouser. http://www.mouser.com They'll have more surface mount LEDs than you'll know what to do with.

Here is a comparison of a 1.2mm, 1.5 volt lamp with a SMT LED. The lamp voltage is 1.55 volts and 9.4ma. Very little heat. The lamps come from www.led-switch.com.

The LED is a SMT LED from Litchfield Station. 12.4 volts DC, 1 k resistor, 12.24ma.

You can also get many flavors of LEDs from Jameco (www.jameco.com) and Digikey (www.digikey.com).  1206 (1.6 x 3.2mm) and 0805 (1.25 x 2.00mm) are some of the smallest.  I have to say, I can solder 1206 pretty well, but 0805 are very hard to work with using a normal soldering iron.  There are smaller LEDs too - 0603; I can't imagine trying to hand solder those.

Litchfield Station and Richmond Controls are two DCC suppliers that I know of who supply SMT LEDs with six inch leads already soldered to the LED. In a previous response in this thread, the lower light is the one with a six inch lead soldered to the  LED. The LED is a Golden White 0.06" X 0.03" or 1.5mm X  0.76mm. Dig out your caliper. The resistor in the photo is 1k, the resistor most commomly used for LEDs on DCC decoders.

Link to someones photo of a 603 LED with leads.
