How about, "Instant, though very short-term, smoke generators."

I beilieve that Dave B hit it on the head. There is no readback! I went ahead and entered a lower number for the sound volume and pressed enter CV. Although I received no confirmation, the sound seems lower.
It is no wonder that MRC decoders are in such small demand.

I have a Roundhouse 4-4-0 with MRC sound and cannot seem to change the CVs. When I select a CV and push the RD CV on the Zep, it comes back with a no acknowlege error message. There is a brief hiss from the speaker, then nothing. I have the Zeps program output hooked directly to a piece of track and nothing else. I am using "page" mode. All sounds work as described in the factory data sheet I just want to fine tune the loco.
Aside from a defective decoder, what could be wrong?
