Recently there was a similar thing using a Soundtrax DSX on three different threads:http://cs.trains.com/forums/1456169/ShowPost.aspxhttp://cs.trains.com/forums/1430099/ShowPost.aspxhttp://cs.trains.com/forums/1426078/ShowPost.aspx
A few years ago SoundTraxx was working on a system where the sound follows the train around the layout. There have also been many threads about this sort of system.

I typed in "stationary sound" into the search box.

The above is my opinion, from an active and experienced Model Railroader in N scale and HO since 1961.
(Modeling Freelance, Eastern US, HO scale, in 1962, with NCE DCC for locomotive control and a stand alone LocoNet for block detection and signals.) http://waynes-trains.com/ at home, and N scale at the Club.
Somewhere I read an article about using a sound decoder under the layout wired to computer type speakers. This was programmed to run as a consist with what ever Loco you wanted. Of course I forgot where the article was. Can you guys and gals help? Also would like to know which decoder falls into decent but not to expensive.
Thanks
