Recently there was a similar thing using a Soundtrax DSX on three different threads:

A few years ago SoundTraxx was working on a system where the sound follows the train around the layout.  There have also been many threads about this sort of system.

I did the under layout sound thing myself but instead of a sound decoder I used the MRC diesel sound box and hooked it up to a 5.1 surround sound speaker system (after disabling the center woofer) and set the speakers out at different locations on the layout.

The basic idea is pretty simple, you have say an EMD sound decoder attached to the DCC power going to the rails, and connect the sound output up to a small stereo system with speakers under the layout, and assign it an ID no. like 100. Everytime you run an EMD engine on the layout, you m.u. "engine" 100 to a consist with the engine you're running.

Try this: http://cs.trains.com/forums/1344347/ShowPost.aspx

I typed in "stationary sound" into the search box.

Elmer.

The above is my opinion, from an active and experienced Model Railroader in N scale and HO since 1961.

(Modeling Freelance, Eastern US, HO scale, in 1962, with NCE DCC for locomotive control and a stand alone LocoNet for block detection and signals.) http://waynes-trains.com/ at home, and N scale at the Club.

Somewhere I read an article about using a sound decoder under the layout wired to computer type speakers. This was programmed to run as a consist with what ever Loco you wanted. Of course I forgot where the article was. Can you guys and gals help? Also would like to know which decoder falls into decent but not to expensive.

Thanks
