Hi all,
I'm ready to install decoders in a pair of Proto1000 RDC-1's. No sound - just plain motor & light control. Can anybody tell me which particular ones [from reputable manufacturers] would work best for these?
Thanx...

Any one of the wired decoders from who ever you chose.
I installed a DH163D from Digitrax in my P1K Budds and they run just fine. Simple hard wire installation. Here is one example of an RDC decoder install: http://www.bevteccom.co.uk/Rail/DCC/P1k_RDC.html
Hope this helps.
I'ver used the DH163D and the NCE D13SR on various RDCs. Unless you want a feature that only the DH163D provides (which is pretty much just Digitrax transponding), I think that the NCE DS13SR is a better value for the money for this installation.

Consider the Digitrax 5-series decoders (125, 165, etc.) for this reason: I know you said you don't want sound, but suppose you change your mind? These Digitrax decoders, which are good products in their own right, will accept the Soundbug or other sound-only Digitrax decoders as compatable add-ons. Yes, you can wire those sound units directly with other motor decoders, but you may encounter issues when you try to program them.
These Digitrax decoders are programmable, which may be the only way to get RDC sounds on board.
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
Thanx again everybody, for all the input! I ordered some NCE D13SR's.
MrB - I appreciate the advice about sound, I just never remembered haring the B&O's Budd cars making much noise other than the clackety-clack of the wheels. (Maybe in a few years...?)
Speaking of sound, does anybody have a good description of what the RDC sounded like?
The real cars had a small two-cycle GM Detroit Diesel V-6. That suggests something like an EMD 567, but that would be overwhelming from an RDC, wouldn't it? I'm assuming that the horn didn't sound like something off an F-7 either.

MisterBeasley,
I installed DH163D's in my P1K RDC's with excellent results, if I were to install a decoder today I would follow your advice. It's so easy to add a Soundbug later and program it with the RDC sound project available from the Digitrax Sound Depot. It's also worthwhile replacing the light bulbs with LED's and no resistor is required with the DH165xx decoders.
