There indeed are decoders that do both sound and DCC.  I know digitrax makes some.  Soundtraxx is probably one of the better manufacturers for sound and DCC.  Here's a link to the Tsunami section of their website.  Teh Tsunami is a DCC digital sound decoder that also incorporates motor control.

You can get them both ways.  So if you just want to use one decoder for both, you have to be careful when selecting a decoder.  If you buy from Tony's, call him up and he will steer you to the right ones.  I use Soundtraxx mostly.  The cheap MRC decoders are not recommended.  Not sure about their new "Briliance" line.

Elmer.

The above is my opinion, from an active and experienced Model Railroader in N scale and HO since 1961.

(Modeling Freelance, Eastern US, HO scale, in 1962, with NCE DCC for locomotive control and a stand alone LocoNet for block detection and signals.) http://waynes-trains.com/ at home, and N scale at the Club.

If you see ANY decoders made by MRC avoid them like the plague!Dead [xx(]
