Bachmann Spectrum 2-10-2 and GP35 Engine Address

Just got these 2 new Bachmann locos and can't change the engine address with my Digitrax Zephyr.  I can change the other parameters like accel/decel, but not CV1 in either loco.  I can change CV1 in my Loksound decoder.  What am I missing.  I am trying to do this in OPS mode on the mainline and i've also tried page mode on a programming track...but no luck.  Thanks!!

What address are you trying to enter, 2 digit or 4 digit ?

2 digit can only be changed/set on the program track.

4 digit can be changed/set on the main (OPS).

You must change CV29 to permit 4 digit addressing. Put 34 as a value in CV29 if you want 4 digit address. Put a value of 2 in CV29 if you want 2 digit addressing.

Do you have DecoderPro at home ?

Hi UpNorth and Otis...I am using 2-digit addressing, and have tried the changes to CV29.  I can see that the changes to 29 are being accepted (if I change the direction bit, etc) but none of the settings make changing CV1 work.  I have CV29 set to 6 (the default) now, but tried all the settings that I thought might work.  No luck so far.  Any other ideas on what I might be missing?  Thanks again!!

I'd change CV29 to value of 2 and leave it their. This turns analog conversion off. Known cause of few issues. 

To change the 2 digit address you must be on the programming track, OPS will not work.  Other suggestion if this  does not work, reset to defaults.

You might want to try putting the Zephyr into "blast mode" for programming by changing  OPSSW #7 to closed (C).  Be aware you must remove the connection to layout and only leave the program track connected. Blast mode sends the commands out on program track AND rail A rail B from what I've read.  Change the OPSSW $7 back to thrown (T) when finished.  This is not documented in the book but came up in Digitrax forum and JMRI forum.

UpNorth....the OPSSW #7 thing worked!!!!  That switch isn't even listed in the Digitrax book.  Thanks a billion for that tip!!!!  Gotta go play now.

That new 2-10-2 is a really slow moving loco.  Is that typical for these to have such a low "top speed"...or do I have to change a CV?  Everything is at factory defaults now...and it was like this out of the box.  Thanks!!

2-10-2's are drag freights.  Depending on the road you model, depends on the top speed.  Between 35 and 45 is considered top end for these locos.  The DM&IR ran thiers around 35 to 40mph topped out with a load behind them, C&IM ran thiers closer to the 45mph, but then again central Illinios is very very flat compared to Upper Minnesota and Northern Wisconsin.  Other roads ran differently.  Since I have a DM&IR 2-10-2  I have put the top end at scale 40mph and adjusted the rest of the steps accordingly.  Though I do plateau the throttle for a couple of steps.
