As you've already discovered, the Athearn BB units just pull straight up and the weight comes off.  Sometimes they need persuasion.

I have a couple of Athearn RTR F7-A's that have a small machine screw that holds the weight in place.

I had tried that. After posting I took a pry bar (small screwdriver really) to it and it came right offCool [8D]
