Cmdr - I used a soundtrax one inch rd with one section of their enclosures for the A units. I used a 3/4 X 1 1/2 oval with homemade styrene enclosure for the B units. For sound I put a Soundtrax DSX in each unit and a Digitrax 163 motor decoder in each. I like the DSX because they have more sounds and are not as picky as the LC sound decoders. Also I put a 760 uf stay alive cap on the DSX decoders as I had the room for it. I can't get to my loco's right now as my wife just went to nights and is sleeping def don't want to wake her up..Shhhhhh! But later tonight when she heads off to work I will pull the B unit shell off and tell you exactly what size speaker I used and where and how I placed the speakers. If you are at all interested in a C-liner set get the Proto1000 from Trainworld for like 49 bucks. Both are powered. The reason I say this is because they look great and they have enough room in them to put in a kitchen sink. They are also nice and heavy. I put in 1 x 1 1/2 large oval speakers and a 1000 uf stay alive cap. Lots of room, easy install and they sound and look great.

I have a set of the F2's and F1's and I put a DSX for sound and a Digitrax 163 for motor control in each. In the A unit's I put a one inch round speaker above the cab and on the B units I used a 3/4 wide x I think 1 1/4 inch long speaker above the front trucks. I am guessing on the size of the speaker but that should be close. Lots of room in the B units for a speaker on each end if you wanted to. For the speaker in the A units I used the round Soundtraxx enclosures. I used the end cap and one enclosure ring and it sits up nice and high. All sound great. I program all four decoders in one set for the same address as they will always be mu'ed. the other set I only used same address for the sound and motor decoders for each individual unit as they will operate independantly from the other set and each other on occasion. They sound pretty awesome when you put them all together. I have a short video of the four mu'ed with sound I will try to dig it up and post it.

Hi folks,

I have two sets of Proto2000 FA2's (A & B Units) and need to install engine/sound decoders.  Any suggestions on what to install (that fits).  Please help me out with speaker size also if you don't mind.   I'm leaning toward a generic soundtrax alco decoder.  LOK sound is too expensive.

Thanks much,

Russ

I have a couple of FA1s I want to convert.

I'm considering using the DSD-LL100LC from Soundtraxx, as it is designed as a drop-in replacement for the PCB that is already in there.

Space is an issue, because you have about 28 mm in there, and the height of the decoder, standoff and weight comes in at just under 25 mm.

The speaker can go up front, it's just a matter for figuring out what speaker will fit. You have about an inch and a quarter in width to play with. There may not be room for an enclosure, unless the entire speaker fits right at the front. The cab detail may need to go to make room too. If need be, that plastic piece at the front can go, as it is more of support for the cab detail and a doghouse for the flywheel than anything else.
