Decoder Help Needed!
Posted by Chessie Sys. 3022 on Thursday, July 8, 2010 10:59 AM

Hello,

I've recently decided that I'm going to build my layout using the Digitrax Zephyr control system. I am new to DCC though, so I need a bit of help.

Can I use any decoder with this system? For locomotives, that is.

Also, I was looking at the MC2 decoder to put in my Bachmann Spectrum GP30. Is this a good choice for a decoder for me, and will it work with the Zephyr?

(Here's a link: http://www.bromsgrovemodels.co.uk/TCSDecodersMC2.htm)

Thanks in advance!

Most likely, however I bet there are some exceptions out there.

If the decoder conforms to NMRA standards (which I believe most if not all newer decoders do), then it should work fine with the Zephyr.  I use a Zephyr and thus far it has handled all the decoders I've tried perfectly.  This includes, Digitraxx, Soundtraxx, and MRC decoders.

Not sure about your specific decoder question for the Bachmann GP30, but I'm sure someone else here will know.

The Zephyr is a good choice as many on here use it.  How big is your layout and how many locos will you be running?  Before you buy the Zephyr if you plan on running multi trains at the same time, take a look at the Empire Builder.. It is a little more but you get more Amps, the DT402 throttle is fairly easy to use and you can run two trains at the same easily and if you are running more, it is easy to recall the locos that are off running but not on the throttle.

Thanks for your help! I'll make sure to check whether the decoders I plan on using are to NMRA standards, and glad to know the Zephyr is working for you.

I only plan on running two to three trains max at a time since I only have a 4x8 layout, but I'm going with the Zephyr so if I plan to expand or make a new, bigger layout I can use my current control system. I have a feeling that the Empire Builder would be too big for any of my uses, but I appreciate the recommedation!

I have the Zephyr and use many TCS decoders with no problem, several of them are the MC2, which is an excellent small decoder.

That's good to hear! I'm loving all the positive feedback I'm hearing about the Zephyr too. So does the MC2 have a good amount of things it can do? See, told you guys I'm clueless about them. Tongue

The TCS decoders (including the MC series) conform to the NMRA standards and will work fine with the Digitrax system.

Decoder Help Needed!
Posted by twcenterprises on Wednesday, December 8, 2010 8:18 AM

Well, this is probably as good a place as any to post my own question.

I am considering adding sound decoders to my fleet of 50 or 60 locos, from various manufacturers such as Athearn, Stewart, Atlas, and others.  Most are models of first generation diesels, such as EMD F units, GP7's, a couple Alco's ... you get the idea.  I also have a few steamers, Bachmann Spectrums.  So here's my question.  Has anyone compiled a chart or break down comparison of available sound decoders, comparing price, features, reviews, current ratings, etc.?  I don't want to spend money on something, only to find out there was something better/cheaper/more accurate, as appropriate.  I currently only have a 4x8, but hope to change this as I equip my fleet.

By the way, although my profile shows me as new, I am actually a returning member after being away for a couple years.

Thanks in advance.

I haven't seen a compilation chart. Each manufacturer has their own lists of what sounds are in each decoder.
