Hi,

The NCE website recommends a N12SR with a shortened harness.

NCE has a heap of decoder recommendations at the following address:

I actually have a Z-scale decoder installed in my Proto 2000 S1.  That way I didn't have to remove any of the frame to fit it under the hood.  (Not much room.)

WARNING:  Make sure you isolate the motor from the frame in your S1 first BEFORE you install a decoder in itOtherwise, the decoder will go *poof!*

Even though Proto 2000 says it's "DCC-ready", it really isn't.

Yes the Z or N scale decoder would be a better fit. And listen to the previouse poster about ISOLATING the motor. There is more info on Toneys web site. I hardwired TCS MC2 decoders in mine with out a problem.

I pray every day I break even, Cause I can really use the money!

I started with nothing and still have most of it left!
