I finally found where I had seen the 2-6-6-2+2-6-6-2 Beyer Garratt. Page 126 of the book "World's Greatest Steam Locomotives" by Eugene Huddleston. The book is basically about the Big Boy, the Allegheny, and the N&W Class "A" and comparisons of the three. It also breifly covers some other large locos from around the world. One of which was this 2-6-6-2+2-6-6-2. This was never made, but was patented in 1925. Some of the specs; well over 400 tons, tractive effort around 200,000 lbs., 10 foot boiler diameter, and 160 sq. ft. grate area. Sounds like it would have been VERY cool! Maybe it would make another good next project for me.....

The Shay-geared Garrett is most definitely a fake, but an imaginative and enjoyble one!

I hadn't notice that it said the picture had been altered. And about the large 2-6+6-2-2-6+6-2, somewhere on the maze of a site, it has a 4-8-8-4+4-8-8-4 "Garrett Boy" and a 4-8-8+4-8-8-4+8-8-4 "Bigger Boy", both made from Big Boy parts. If yuo get a chance, you should try to cover as much of the site as possible.

Certainly is an interesting loco. I really like the stretched Heisler on the same page. It did say in the photo credits that the photo of the "Shay" was altered, but I would love to see someone make a model of it anyway! I remember reading somewhere that Beyer-Garrett had plans for a large loco for American railways, like a 2-6+6-2 2-6+6-2 maybe?!?! THAT would be fun to see built also!

I found a site with a picture of a shay garrett locomotive. Has anybody else seen it? It would be at this site: http://home.att.net/~Berliner-Ultrasonics/bwrkapg1.html#lngarr It looks real enough, but I am not sure if this is a fake or not. Does anybody have any info?
