sp sd and gp ho engine decals
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, April 2, 2007 11:28 PM
hi,
i've purchased all my locos and rolling stock (yeah right) for my HO layout and have several bachman and athearn SP SD45's and GP's with some of them having duplicated engine numbers.  is there a better, best or easiest applied decal manufactured you would recommend? i've only seen ads for decals from 'rail graphics' so far. your personal hands on experience in this area would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
michael

Michael--I'd check with Microscale.  They make exceptionally fine decals for just about everything, and you could probably get a sheet of SP diesel decals that would do just fine.  Since you've got duplicates of the SD and GP's, you'd probably only need to change the last number on the locomotive, which should be fairly easy to do by just lightly painting over the last number, then applying the new Microscale decal.

Their decal sets are very accurate--I've been using the brand to number my Rio Grande steamers for years.  Excellent quality.

Your LHS should have a good supply, or a catalogue for ordering the correct decals.

Microscale #8711 will do nicely for Espee's hood units in the 1960-1970 time frame. . Also check out Microscale #87177 for the 1960-1980 time frame. The Black Widow diesels need the #87201 decal set.

In addition to SSW9389's suggestion of the basic SP "Bloody Nose" lettering set, Microscale 87-11, you could use MS set 87-1260, which has just the number jumble (no road name, etc.) in lettering gray. The one missing item will be the number board decals, which may not be done on your models, anyway.

I'd steer clear of the MS 87-201 set, except for the wings. Lettering gray was the standard for lettering and numbering on the "Black Widow", Daylight and "Bloody Nose" schemes. The 87-201 set uses silver/aluminum lettering--not the standard.

Recommend removing all of the numbers from the locos and replacing with decals. That way, the number style and color will match. Any slight variation from the rest of the lettering on the model is ok, as a slight bit of weathering will conceal the difference.
