Calvin--

"Combine" is short for "combination", which means that 2 or more facilities are housed (or "combined") in a single passenger car. Common types are the passenger-baggage combine, which has seating in one section and a baggage compartment in the other, and the mail-express combine , which has a Railway Post Office apartment in one section and a room for parcel shipments in the other.
