There were standard designs and paint schemes on many different roads. Repainting was usually done as part of scheduled maintenance programs, at least in around here (WV) because paint and labor cost $.
RR historical socieities usually sell copies of painting diagrams, etc. Some have even produced sets of paint chips so you can get an exact match for the color you want to apply. C&NW group in particular has reprinted tons of documentary information which is interesting reading in and of itself. Visit their websites and see what they offer.

Were there strict standards for painting/repainting stations when a new scheme was adopted by such midwestern railroads as C&NW, MILW, CB&Q, IC, etc. Any information on scheme and era for these in particular would be of great interest.
