This is a subject dear to my heart. Almost every railroad line in Michigan, except the MC (NYC) mainline and the GTW mainline, was a shortline (OK maybe just a branch line) in one way or another. Even the C&O Detroit - Chicago line was patched together (in 1900) from sections that were shortlish at times.

The Boyne City Gaylord and Alpena and the Ausable and Northwestern are my favorites, but then there was the Chicago Kalamazoo and Saginaw and the lamentable Michigan Northern.

If you are interested in Michigan lines, you should check out
www.michiganrailroads.com and the Mich RR History site, RRHX:

Enjoy!

I am currently modeling the Ann Arbor from Toledo to Ann Arbor in HO scale. My time period is 1976-1999. This allows me to have DT&I run through as well as NS. It will operate with track warrants. Now if they would just remake the modern AA diesel decals!

gerfust, the line that ran north-south through kingston, michigan was the GTW's former pontiac, oxford & northern(aka the "polly anna") railway line that ran from caseville to pontiac. the line was torn out about 1985.

Mr Krump, what time era are you interested in? I think the Lake Superior & Ishpeming;Escanaba & Lake Superior are still around. The Grand Trunk Western,Ann Arbor,Wisconsin Central,Detroit & Makinac,Port Huron&Detroit, and Pere Marquette also served MIichigan in the past.I don't have any up to date state maps, only railroads I am sure of are CSX and CN.

I am looking at modeling the Lansing - St. Johns Electric Railway (later part of the Michigan Interurban). It won't be for several years (decades), though. It is a 15-20 mile line built in 1901 and discontinued in the mid-1930s. I am also interested in the Grand Trunk that ran through St. Johns (although not a short line) and whatever railroad ran north-south through Kingston, MI (in the thumb, south of Saginaw).

Hi. I don't model Michigan, but I used to look at Michigan shortlines. My favorite was the Michigan Northen with its Baldwin diesels and the Mackinaw City car ferry. There used to be a lot of very interesting railroads in the state.Myself I model the Erie Lackawanna.
