I am looking to get a picture of the herald used on a Montpelier & Wells River Railroad steam engine. If you know of one which shows a GOOD side-view shot please let me know [:)] Thank you!

Colin,
Don't know if this will help. I just did a Google search, and Amazon.com lists 7 used copies, starting at $ 79.41 of the book:
Vermont's Granite Railroads: The Montpelier and Wells River and the Barre and Chelsea, by Robert C. Jones, William G. Gove (Contributor), Whitney J. Maxfield (Contributor). The used copies seem a bit pricey, but you might be able to find a copy via Inter Library Loan. Good luck.

Colin,
You're welcome. On a hunch I just did a search at the Index of Magazines at this site, using M&WR as the topic and had two hits. You'll want to do it yourself to get the details, but one article is in a 1941 issue of Trains. You'll probably have to get that from the NMRA's Kalmbach Memorial Library. The other citation is to what appears to be a two page article in an historical guide to railroads, published by Kalmbach. Don't know if there are usable photos in either citation. You might want to do a Google search to see if you can locate an historical society in Montpelier and then contact them to see what they have, if anything, about the M&WR in their files.
