The only commuter service operated under the Amtrak flag was a pair of Chicago-Valparaiso locals taken over from Conrail about 1980.  They used the ex-C&NW long-haul bi-level gallery coaches although I believe that some Amfleet coaches were substituted occasionally.  The power initially was a pair of P30CH's since none of the coaches had control cabs.  Later power was an F40PH on one end and a CR GP7 on the other end until some of the coaches were fitted with control cabs.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul
