While we are on the subject ... it would have been useful if the article had shown both sides of the engine. It refers to the grab irons on the engineer side but they are not shown. This new kind of "quick hit" article can be useful but that Soo Line F one and even Jim Six's article were just a bit too brief for me to really follow the steps. Maybe the problem is mine. Also .....This may seem like heresy but sometimes really crisp black and white photos are better than color for detail on this kind of article .....

You can go to the MODEL RAILROADER home page and click on "Current Issue." The October 2003 MR includes an article by Bob Rivard on modeling a Soo Line F7 in HO scale, and the scale-size template for masking the red nose is online as a PDF file.
