Hello,

My Grandfather worked for A&S railroad after returning from WW2. I am hoping to gather enough info and photos of details on anything to do with A&S to build a tribute to him in my budding layout. Any books out there that might detail this rail line and it's history would be helpful too.

The new Morning Sun book,"Pennsylvania Short Lines,In Color,Volume #1 has a few pages and pictures of the Aliquippa & Southern,plus others.Good luck and good modeling.

The Official Guide of Railways, 1967, states,

"The road connects with the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie RR at Aliquippa, PA, preforming switching operations with said road, and also furnishing switching facilities to mills, furnaces and other industries on the line."

"Public team track for carload freight is conveniently located in Aliquippa, PA, adjacent to the A&S RR Co. office building."

"Total Number of Line Operated 45.82."

"Locomotives: Diesel Electric - 17, Cars: - 940." There was no mention of what type and how many of a particular car.[:)]

MTH has produced an Aliquippa and Southern locomotive and two hopper ccars with two additional hopper cars coming in the next two months. I mysekf am in search of paint xheme and lettering information for the A&S caboose. The only photos I have seen in the Morning Sun book show the cabooses paint obliterated by the "mills weathering".

While researching A & S be sure to look into Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation. That company owned all the stock!

The old motive power roster I found was pure EMD: 3 SW8s #800-802; 1 SW9 #1200, and 13 SW1200s #1201-1213.

The entry for A&S says that the majority of its cars were high capacity coke hoppers and mill gondolas which were not interchanged, used only inside J & L Steel. The picture in the book shows that these cars were rusty, battered gons and rusty, high side hoppers with paint burned off by heat. Pretty basic cars, but the weathering and details are unique from car to car. These pictures even inspired me, a non-Pburg railfan, to assemble an 8-car coke fleet of my own.
