Not living in the U.S. I'm not too sure of the distance but you could try Palmer MA. It is supposed to be one of the Hot Spots in the country for train watching.
Palmer lies about 80 miles west of Boston and 15 miles east of Springfield.
You should also check out the Resturant at the depot. It is excellent. Hope you can find it O.K. CPPedler

Ron,
Manchester is fairly light for Rail traffic. I believe the Gulford Transportation ends there and New Hamshire northern takes it up to Concord. Most of the traffic is downtown. South of there you might get some railfanning in around Nashua, and then Lowell, Ma.
that area is not really big on rail traffic.

Palmer is the best spot around for train watching, and has a nice resturant as mentioned. Amtrak, CSX sometimes with run thru power and New England Central all go thru. NEC has there HQ there so there are usually some GP-38s there sitting or switching.
Also fairly close by in Warren MA is one of the best railroad hobby shops in New England, Tuckers Hobbys.
