CN Paint job on Athearn F7
Posted by xdford on Saturday, March 11, 2006 6:17 AM
Hi all,

I was looking at an Athearn F7 a-b set today but was disappointed by what looked to be too much black and too little red over the nose of the unit. As I am in Australia, I can only go on photos I have taken (few...) and book photos (remarkably even fewer...) as well as memories to go on.

Is the nose and number etc true of the "original" zebra strip or am I right feeling disappointed in the "translation'? I have use pictures to get I think better results than these but you be the judge of that on www.xdford.digitalzones.com

Thanks for any help...

Trevor

Greetings Trevor, While far from infallible, Athearn in general, produces pretty accurate paint schemes for it's locomotive models. I don't personally model CN, so am trying to picture the correct paint scheme in my mind. As a sidebar, you are probably aware that Athearn currently produces two versions of the EMD F-Units. The older version features tooling that is about 40 years old. These are generally less expensive, have good motors, and can be made to look pretty good using the Walthers diesel dress up kit. The Athearn Genesis F-Units are awesome looking, have great detail, including cab interior, but are a little pricey. I'm not certain if CN is offered in the Genesis version.

The Athearn Genesis F7's only come in green and gold. They sure look nice, though.

These aren't Athearn units, but this is what the CN F7 should look like:

A very belated thank you very much for the above photos Colin! The Athearn units at the noe anyway seem to be a hybrid of the two schemes... I feel a whole lot better about how my schemes look too! Out of interest whose models are these? Kind regards Trevor
